Wisdom Wood
Wisdom Wood
Wisdom Wood, running down one side of the site, has recently been planted with thousands of daffodils, snowdrops, bluebells, mixed crocus and aconites. The work has been undertaken with the support of the Peterborough City Council Youth Offending Service’s, ‘Give it Back’ scheme in conjunction with the charity Froglife. We hope that the young people involved might develop an interest in horticulture as a career option.Wisdom Wood is available as a practical outdoor learning place for local groups and over time the woods will be transformed into an ecological haven.A master plan for the use of this ‘urban wood’ has been developed, providing six ‘project learning zones’ where local schools and other groups are able to undertake wildlife and other ecological projects. These can include bird and bat box construction and monitoring, the planting of woodland flowers, creating a ‘bug house’ from trees and branches and establishing a ‘bog area’ to ensure a diverse range of plants.Zone 1City College Peterborough are using this area to support all aspects of the local community by running classes there for families and young people as part of the College’s engagement provision. This will include students with learning and or physical disabilities and some older learners as well.Zones 2Local charity Froglife is working in Wisdom Wood to create a wildlife habitat with a reptile and amphibian focus. The project is being undertaken by marginalised young people between the ages of 10-17 years of age who are completing reparation work as part of a Court order. It is hoped that this project will provide new interest for the young people involved and help to divert them away from offending lifestyles. It is also hoped that the completed project will act as a showcase for the work that well supported marginalised young people can create.
